Focus: Research relevant legal precedent, statutory authority, and regulatory requirements applicable to the matter.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and analyze relevant case law, statutes, and regulations
  • Assess the strength and applicability of precedents to the current matter
  • Document the legal landscape including areas of settled and unsettled law
  • Identify recent developments or trends in relevant legal areas

Anti-patterns (RFC 2119):

  • The agent MUST NOT cit outdated or overturned precedents
  • The agent MUST NOT cherry-pick favorable precedents while ignoring unfavorable ones
  • The agent MUST NOT rely on secondary sources without verifying primary authority
  • The agent MUST NOT fail to check for recent legislative or regulatory changes

Review Agents

Authority

Mandate: The agent MUST verify research is based on authoritative, current sources and analysis is applicable to the matter.

Check:

  • The agent MUST verify that all cited precedents are current and have not been overruled or distinguished
  • The agent MUST verify that regulatory analysis covers the correct jurisdictions for this matter
  • The agent MUST verify that research distinguishes between settled law and areas of uncertainty
  • The agent MUST verify that analysis is applied to the specific facts, not presented as generic legal overview

Research

Criteria Guidance

Good criteria examples:

  • "Research memo cites at least 3 relevant precedents with analysis of how each applies to the current matter"
  • "Regulatory review maps each applicable regulation to specific compliance requirements with current enforcement trends"
  • "Analysis distinguishes between settled law, evolving interpretations, and areas of legal uncertainty"

Bad criteria examples:

  • "Research is complete"
  • "Precedents are found"
  • "Regulations are reviewed"

Completion Signal (RFC 2119)

Research memo MUST exist with relevant precedents analyzed, regulatory landscape mapped, and legal strategy recommendations documented. Researcher MUST have confirmed all cited sources are current and authoritative. Analyst MUST have validated the applicability of findings to the specific matter.
